She had been away from home for 12 years when the Cherokee Historical Association invited her back to teach art and woodcarving at the Cherokee High School. . . ."

Richard Fields was Chief of the Texas Cherokees from 1821 until his death in 1827. Assisted by Bowl and others, he spent much time in Mexico City, first with the Spanish government and later with the government of Mexico, trying to acquire a clear title to their land. They also had to contend with rumors started by white Texans regarding their intended alliances with Comanches, Tawakonis, and other Indian tribes to attack San Antonio. . . ."

About the Author
Sherry Lynn Ferguson grew up convinced that she would eventually be an artist. But her studies and work in international relations, history, and English literature drew her in another direction. She has lived overseas and once taught college students in Hong Kong. Writing fiction allows her to combine her varied interests while continuing to discover new ones. She and her husband share their Virginia home and garden with the ghosts of a neighboring Civil War fort. Lord Sidley's Last Season is her third book and Quiet Meg and The Honorable Marksley are also available.

Glad I bought it

What a charming book! I liked it as much for what it had - a fun hero, a sensible heroine, witty repartee, plenty of interaction between H and h - as for what it didn't have: no haughty, scheming misses, no last-fling mistress that has to be bought off before he decides to settle down and no purely physical attraction. How refreshing! Even the characters that are portrayed in a less than favourable light are viewed with amusing forbearance, because they are either still young, in love or just a bit silly. I thoroughly enjoyed this 'non-angsty' read. I wish there were more like it.

Like other reviewers I would have enjoyed more character development, but I did not debit my rating because of Lord Sidley's marvelously witty repartee as well as the author's accurate portrayal of the period's language, mores, history and costume. I am so pleased to have discovered a worthy successor to Georgette Heyer.

Superior traditional regency.

Ferguson has a great style, and while she shows you that the period is Regency, she doesn't bash you over the head with it. There is much smart and witty repartee. The hero is one of the most enchanting I have come across in regency fiction. In contrast, the heroine was something of a dry stick, especially for an artist. She also lacked the courage to open herself up to him, and protested far too long. Anyway, it is still much better than most Regencies, and recommended... shame about the heroine though.

The Real Deal and the First To Tell the Tale

In 1967, Col. Hans Christian Adamson and USAF Capt. George Francis Kosco USN, published "Halsey's Typhoons" with Crown, their magnificant eye witness account of the how two typhoons more powerful than the Japanese, dealt death and destruction to Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet. The book also recounts the dramatic rescue of the survivors, plucked from the sea by heroic Americans, and how Captain Henry Plage, against orders, sailed his ship, the USS Tabberer into typhoon Cobra,, making the rescue possible. The first of these typhoons, called Cobra, was the more powerful of the two, and was the one in which Plage defied the odds and made his rescue. Repudiating claims of Drury and Clavin that their "Halsey's Typhoon" tells the "untold rescue," this one came first and tells the story, based not only on an exensive interview with Henry Plage, but on Kosco's own experiences as Admiral Halsey's righthand man. The book contains dramatic photographs of the impact of the storms on the American ships, the rescue and of the rescued survivors. With yet another book about typhoon Cobra due out in March (Halsey's Typhoon" deals only with Cobra and not the second typhoon, Viper) there is renewed interest in these dramatic events. It is unfortunate that Drury and Clavin failed to give sufficient credit to Adamson and Kosco's "Halsey's Typhoons," the obvious inspiration for their own title. This does a great disservice to Kosco, a hero in his own right. There are passages in Drury and Clavin's book that are simple paraphrasing of language in the original. Because of this, they should have included "Halsey's Typhoons" and Adamson and Kosco in their acknowledgements. Instead, they merely list it in their bibliography along with dozens of other books, giving the impression that it was of no significant importance, To the contrary,"Halsey's Typhoons, " including the maps tracing the course of both storms, is the real deal, telling the story of the events, including the rescue; Even the map of Cobra's path in Drury and Calvin's book, bears a distinct resemblance to the map in "Halsey's Typhoons," a neglected, almost forgotten, classic that told the story first. It is extremly well written and powerful in its recounting of one of the most significant events in American naval history.
