Good Start to New Trilogy
By Jessica McKelden Cave
I've read Cathy Maxwell books in the past and every time I get the same impression: they're just good. They're a little underwhelming at times, but they're good reads. When I find them, I pick them up because they'll be quick and entertaining, but never anything to write home about. This book stays consistent with that pattern.
I really liked the heroine, Thea, and her sons, Jonathan and Christopher. I don't come across widows as heroines very often any more, so in that respect, it was different from what I typically read. The hero, Neal, was the typical historical romance hero. Nothing really distinguishing about him. Neal's siblings, Harry and Margaret (lead characters in the remaining books in the trilogy, I'm assuming) are great, as well. Even though there is a large amount of push-back from them regarding Neal and Thea's marriage, they still end up coming off as really great, well-rounded characters. I really look forward to reading more abou them in the future.
The fantasy elements are very light. In fact, I would barely even call them that. The next book, however, seems to have much more potential for these elements to have an important part in the next book, The Scottish Witch: The Chattan Curse.
I wasn't really a fan of the trilogy. I know the author is trying to tie them all into a trilogy, but it was too close to a cliffhanger for my taste. (Yes, I do know that this is a romance novel and I'm sure the author is not going to kill off any main characters, but I just don't like that it's not explicitly wrapped up.)
I will definitely pick up the remaining books in the trilogy, just to finish out the story. I do find myself interested in the remaining characters and would like to see them happy and paired off, sans curse.

Family love along with romantic love
By Sandy Kay
Bottom line summary: This is an enjoyable start to a trilogy that has some supernatural elements and is not too steamy. Family and friendship relationships are an important part of the book. If you read this book, plan on reading the rest of the series because this book doesn't have a final final ending and the underlying story of the family curse will carry through the series. If you don't want to read the first one and then have to wait for two more books, you may want to wait until they are all out and read them together.
This is the first book in the Chattan curse trilogy; the next book The Scottish Witch: The Chattan Curse is coming out in fall 2012. The premise of the series is that the Chattan family is under a curse that causes them to die if they fall in love. A note to readers with little or no tolerance for "woo woo" supernatural elements: It isn't over the top but there is some of that in this book. I'm not overly fond of the "woo woo" but it was manageable for me in this book. If for religious or other reasons you do not want any magic or supernatural (what I call "woo woo") in your books, then you will want to avoid this series.
The members of the Chattan family in this series are brothers Neal & Harry and sister Margaret. This is Neal's story. In an attempt to avoid falling victim to the curse, but still have children to carry on the family line, Neal hires a matchmaker to find a wife he can't love. But the matchmaker turns out to be Thea, who was Neal's teenage sweetheart until he left without notice. Thea is a duke's daughter who was disowned when she eloped with a poor commoner and is now a widow with two young sons.
Family and friendship is a major theme in this book. Family love is the origin of the curse and how the siblings deal with the curse affects their relationship. Thea's sons aren't just "prop" charactgers in the plot; they are fully a part of the story. As much as the curse works to damage relationships among the characters, the boys are calaysts for a lot of emotional healing. And there are some really cute parts in the book that center on the boys. Thea has a close friend Mirabel who points out the sparks flying between Neal and Thea, saving the characters a lot of introspection about their feelings. In addition, the siblings have a stepmother. I hope the author continues that character through the series because she could create interesting family dynamics and it would be a shame if she had only the one appearance in this book.
Neal and Thea have a "lost love rekindled" kind of romance so their relationship feels more real than the "passion at first sight" type. It suits this book because with the need to introduce the curse and the develop the characters who will be featured in the next two books, there is less space for the author to devote to their relationship. I didn't get all teary at the end but it was a satisfying and enjoyable romance.
There are sex scenes in this book but they aren't especially steamy or of the excruciatingly graphic "tab A into slot B" style often found in romances. The emphasis in the book is more on the emotional connection, not the physical action.
You should know before you start that you will need to read at least the next book (and very likely the entire trilogy) to get the final and complete "happily ever after" for Neal and Thea. It wouldn't be a series about a family curse, if everything was resolved in the first book. If you are the kind of reader who wants each book to stand on its own, you aren't going to be happy with the ending.
I am going with the flow on the series and willing to wait thorugh the next two books for the final happily ever after.

Overall enjoyable romance
By Amazon Customer
3 1/2 Stars. Good points: Well written, page turning story. More romance and relationship and less-graphic sex. Bad Points: cliff hanger "ending?" and strange plot additions, an annoying heroine.
I appreciated so much that this was not a thinly disguised erotic novel like so many historicals have become. The book starts off with an intriguing prologue and then digresses a bit into a somewhat boring and predictable romance, but not unenjoyable. The main problem I had with the heroine is she professes to love and respect the hero, yet she continually laughs off his serious belief in his "curse" and I dislike the plot device of the heroine realizing she must leave the hero out of love and his subsequent pursuit whereby they wrap it all up and decide they'll face their foes together. If it's drawn out enough to be believable, I could go with it, but in this case it's done in about the space of a short chapter - much less convincing.
The ending is equally as intriguing as the prologue - the story started to become interesting again as the brother becomes determined to end the curse. The strange plot additions happen here, though, with the hero's arm going numb and him casually announcing that this is how the curse begins - when we've been given no indication, insight, or foreshadowing that anyone else in the line of the curse has had these symptoms. But then he says, oh this is how happened with my father...and I think OK, but you had been estranged from your father how would you know?
I do want to know how the curse will end so I will be picking up the next book and hoping for a more intriguing tale.
