The Crusades were a series of Holy Wars launched by the Christian states of Europe against the Islamic States of the Middle East. The Pope's preaching led to thousands immediately affixing the cross to their garments and taking up arms; this book is the story of their journey.

Brief in content, but not brief in value or utility
By Charles Franklin
The Crusades: A Very Brief History definitely lives up to its name! Within a couple of pages, readers are provided an overview that maintains a steady balance between providing insight without all the unnecessary discussion. Since it was so brief, I didn't expect to learn anything new; however I actually gained a deeper understanding of some of the causes and consequences of the Crusades.(I didn't know there were so many crusades!) A great book when you need a history refresher, want a quick summary or need an overview in order to get started with deeper study.

The Crusades - an excellent read
By Curious
This book is an informative description of the crusades. The book is very well written, its style is easy to read, making this complex period of history understandable and attainable. A concise background is provided and then each crusade is dealt with succinctly, naming the key players, locating them and outlines the reasons for the crusades. The geography of the area involved is made relevant and clear, using modern names. The book is well rounded up bringing the situation to the present day and the repercussions of these crusades and the implications that bear on current political decisions. A very instructive read.

Missing discussion of Muslim conquest of Jewish and Christian peoples
By Hill Country Bob
Mr. Black has done a service by writing a collection of short biographies or histories. I am impressed by this short work.

I would like to have seen more background on the Muslim religion and wars against the Christians and Jews.

Specifically: (1) Mention that Islam was spread by the sword, and conquest, it was not spread by preaching and convincing people to become Muslims. Many of the people who were conquered and made into Muslims had been Christians or Jews.

(2) People in conquered lands had the choice:
(a) of becoming a Muslim,
(b) being killed or
(c) if a Christian or Jew living as a second class citizen in a land ruled by the Muslims. As second class citizens there were special taxes for them only, and limited rights etc.

(3) The Crusades were essentially a poorly executed series of counterattacks by Christianity against conquests and attacks by Muslims over the centuries.

I consider that these points are vital to understanding the Crusades.
