However, underwater acoustics have traditionally been in the domain of physicists, engineers and mathematicians. Studying the natural history of animals is in the domain of biologists and physiologists. Und- standing behavior of animals has traditionally involved psychologists and zoologists. In short, marine bioacoustics is and will continue to be a diverse discipline involving investigators from a variety of backgrounds, with very different knowledge and skill sets. The inherent inter-disciplinary nature of marine bioacoustics presents a large challenge in writing a single text that would be meaningful to various investigators and students interested in this field. Yet we have embarked on this challenge to produce a volume that would be helpful to not only beginning investigators but to seasoned researchers.

The Best on the subeject!

Not only is this up to date by two of the best and most experienced (in the real world, not just in theoretical modelling, etc.), it is also readable & understandable for those interested in the subject. Yes, some of the technical/mathematical sections are 'intense' but when you get into things like the Fourier analysis they are bound to be- but even then they do an superb job here of explaining them, and after all this is a Springer edition so that is to be expected. But even then Dr. Au & Dr. Hastings do a superb job of explaining the technical aspects in an understandable fashion, and in one area they excel, when they introduce a formula each 'term' is defined right there & then! That ALL scientific papers and authors were required to do this!! Absolutely a required book to have On Your Desk and not on a shelf for anyone interested in the subject. Kudos!!!! To Springer & Dr.s Au & Hastings!
