Miss Catherine Hayward accepts this unusual job. She is surprised to find that the need to keep her new charge from being compromised is genuine. It isn't long before her sympathetic and protective feelings give way to more pleasant, fanciful notions of sharing his company. Soon Catherine finds herself falling for her employer, the Marquess, which makes her the exact type of woman from whom he is to be protected.

From Booklist
Lord Robert is so irresistible mothers encourage their daughters to compromise their virtue for a chance to become his wife. Since he’s not ready to marry, he decides to hire a chaperone to protect him from unwanted advances. His mother, the duchess of Waverly, suggests Miss Catherine Hayward. At first Lord Robert barely notices her, but ultimately he finds himself entranced by the woman who’s meant to keep him unattached. And with the duchess’ help, Catherine transforms herself from mousy chaperone to the talk of the town. Marks has fun with her characters, their situations, and clever plot twists, creating the ideal escapist read. Readers who enjoyed Miss Quinn’s Quandary (2008) and An Agreeable Arrangement (2009) will scoop up Marks’ third historical romance. --Aleksandra Walker

Review
Perhaps it was the sheer absurdity of the situations, but I enjoyed this  story. It was light-hearted, often funny, and an over-the-top look at  the Regency world. The romance is equally flamboyant, but will hold a  reader's interest to the very end. --Romance Reviews Today

An amusing premise - too bad the story didn't live up to it
By ReadsTooMuch
I thought the premise was amusing - a beleaguered nobleman hires a "chaperone" to protect him from the desperate and devious matchmaking mamas and their daughters. It would have worked better if the "hero" were actually an honorable man. But every time he was cornered by one of these ploys, he gave in to temptation (hoping that this time it wasn't really a trap) and tried to take advantage of whoever threw themselves at him, until it was made absolutely clear it was a trap. The man had no morals and no restraint (or even common sense) - on top of being unbelievably smug, conceited and self-absorbed. Then he hires a suitable young woman with the help of his mother (what was SHE thinking?) and had the "chaperone" move in with him. Well, there goes HER reputation. What were any of them thinking? Of course, brainless creature that she is, she falls in love with him immediately on the strength of his good looks. Now that's profound and a good basis for a lasting relationship.

*** Spoilers below ***
He ignores her, thinks she is dull and unattractive - until suddenly, because someone else tells him she is attractive, he falls madly in love with her and can't live without her (I think all this happened in about 3 days). Then she gets upset with him, storms out of the house and ends up living with his mother, who for her own devious reasons is determined to advance a match between them. Why is hero in love with heroine? How can heroine tolerate the rude, self-absorbed hero? Who knows. Then when he sneaks into heroine's bedroom window at his mother's house (having been denied the audience with her he sought), in her struggle to get away from him, and his attempts to hold her, they trip and fall into each other's arms on the bedroom floor. Mother, knowing this is going to happen, waits her sweet time before intruding on them, hoping to find them in a compromising position. Declares her ruined (wait, wasn't she ruined just by living with him earlier?), says he has to marry her then proceeds to play some ridiculous game with their courtship. Actually, that was so convoluted I hardly remember what was going on. But, hero, in his oblivious stupidity, decides to help his love-struck brother's cause with one of the girls whose mother had been throwing her at him. Without vouchsafing a word to his "betrothed" about it, he begins an open courtship of the other girl in order to give his brother an opportunity to be with her. Gee, that's not going to irritate heroine when the news gets back to her that people are expecting an announcement of hero's engagement to other girl. Oh by the way, when she enters society as his mother's protege (after the forced betrothal), no one recognizes her as his former "chaperone," despite the fact that all of his man friends were drooling over her as his chaperone.

Anyway, it all wraps up happily-ever-after for everybody with a moderately ridiculous climax and denouement.

Wish I'd skipped this one.
