Though predictable, the narrative has some life and a few nice tweaks—Aries's acceptance by the townsfolk as a doctor is refreshing. Also, Smallwood focuses more on Aries's development as a woman rather than strictly on the romance, which will likely win over readers who might otherwise pass on a western. (Oct.)

Sweet Story

I enjoyed reading Montana Star. The story moved along well and the characters were likable.
The plot was somewhat predictable because it was a very familiar format. The characters reminded me of of Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman.
That being said Smallwood wrote a tight story balanced out with lovely descriptive passages that really did make the Montana setting an integral piece of the story.

This is the first book by Deann Smallwood that I have read but it will definitely not be the last. This story was so well written and the characters so real I felt such a connection to them. I could feel Aries's disappointment when she saw Ben McCade so young and so not what she imagined. However she soldiered on and made the best of it. The suspense of wondering when Jarret would finally give in was up to the last page; the situations that the early ranchers and their families faced was so heart rending. Medical knowledge was so limited, when compared to today, that you could feel the frustration of a doctor when a life was lost because of lack of that knowledge.

Good story spoiled by amateurish writing

There were a lot of things I liked about this book. Unfortunately, amateurish writing spoiled what could have been a great read.
I liked the characters and I liked the overall plot. Aries' assertion that she was a doctor got a little irritating toward the end (she wasn't, not officially), but I liked her strong personality. Heck, I even liked Whip. Too bad the newbie writing ruined this book for me.
The story is written in omniscient (yuck), and although Smallwood often stays in one character's head for a while, she head-hops quite a bit and the POV was anything but close. I often had to re-read portions to figure out who's perspective the line was written from. Also, the characters call each other by name way too much--another sign of a newbie/amateur writer.
The author 'tells' instead of 'shows.' I kept grumbling into my Kindle, don't tell me how they feel, show me! Another reviewer said the book was corny. It was a tad sappy in places, but the tell/show thing is probably mostly to blame for that perception.
ETA: Though this book wouldn't meet CBA standards, there are no love scenes.
Montana Star is an enjoyable story if you aren't picky about your fiction, but if you prefer professional writing, then don't waste your time.
