Lyssa has been desperate to have a baby and is now in the terrible position of being alone and without comfort

"With or Without You" is the story of Lyssa, a 34-year-old woman, whose long-term boyfriend leaves her at the beginning of the book just after another round of IVF fails. Lyssa has been desperate to have a baby and is now in the terrible position of being alone and without comfort. Soon, she discovers that her ex has left her for a younger, independent woman, Neve, who has goals other than being a mother, such as climbing the Himalayas. Lyssa then embarks on her own quest, quitting her job at a baby magazine (which had decided to move her to "My Divorce" as it better fit her situation) and traveling with a group to hike the Himalayas. This turns out to be a lifechanger, as she finds herself and a new love interest while there. The novel switches between Lyssa, her incredibly fertile sister, ex-Jake, and Jake's best friend who is also in love with Lyssa.
It felt very real, as all of the characters were very flawed and had many short-comings. It was an amazing ride and kept my interest all the way through. I kept predicting what the outcomes would be, and none of them were as I expected- this book definitely does not follow the typical molds of its type. I found myself laughing at parts, frustrated at others, and overall very emotionally involved in the journeys of these characters.

A Well-Written Book

From the first page, Carole gets the reader involved in the story. The characters are well developed, the writing is close to poetic prose and the descriptions of all the sceneries so real that the reader is well immersed and can feel what the author is trying to convey.
This is my first book by Carol Matthews and I fully intend in exploring her other books.

Great British romantic dramedy

After her latest round of in-vitro results in no pregnancy, Lyssa sulks and boyfriend Jake asks for a break in the relationship. Devastated, she expects him to walk in the door that evening as if nothing happened. What she does not realize is that he has moved on and in with a sultry younger work colleague.
Faced with the realization that they may never reconcile, Lyssa puts her baby obsession on hold and takes a leave of absence from work to go trekking in Nepal, where sparks fly as soon as she and Dean, her American-transplant tour guide start a passionate month-long affair. In finding this new passion, Lyssa realizes what was missing from her relationship from Jake once her baby obsession took over.
Upon returning to Britain, Lyssa is faced with uncertainty. After her month in the mountains, returning to civilization is not all it is cracked up to be, what with work, commute, late nights with the gang, and the sudden reappearance of Jake clouding her thoughts, as well as an unrequited crush she was unaware of.
Matthews hits another one outa the ball park with this story. I must admit, it takes awhile to like Lyssa - her baby obsession is completely annoying, as is her tendency to be a doormat. But once she leaves Britain and gains her self confidence, she emerges as a strong and engaging heroine, worthy of all the male attention.
Now, if we can just encourage Matthews to quit with her obsession with all things Regis and Kelly...
