Ira McNewell was supposed to be dead. The government had sent a telegram saying he had been killed in action, yet there he was, sprawled out beneath Alice on the floor of the Black Swan Hotel. Having her for a boss wasn't the best-case scenario, but like thousands of other soldiers coming home from the war, he was broke and hungry. Working at the Black Swan was at least a job, and jobs were hard to come by. Alice had never minded that the folks in Huttig, Arkansas, thought she was dim-witted. At least not until Ira came home. A must read

So this story is the second in the Black Swan trilogy featuring Alice the so called "dim witted" sister. Only she's not dim witted, the blank look is a result of nearsightedness. But being a free spirit she lets the town people think what they will of her.
I'm not going to write a synopsis as that has been done already. But suffice it to say that this story was awesome!! I read the first in the series "Pushin Up daisies" first (I like to read things in order) and have just now finished this one. Thus far, "From Thin Air" is my favorite. Alice and Ira are such true to life characters, so HUMAN you feel for them the whole way. You'll laugh with them, your heart will break with them and you'll rejoice with them too. This book delivers all the emotions. I love that.
Its a clean read, minimal "mild" cussing, and no preachiness.
This book is definitely going onto my "favorites" shelf.

Not Well Written

This was the first book I read by this particular author and I was looking forward to a post war romance. When I read a historical romance novel I don't really care how much sex is in the book as long as there is a strong story, good plot, and characters I care about. If you're looking for historical smut this is not your book. Which is good as far as I'm concerned, I've read books that are labeled historical romance and they're sex scene after sex scene loosely strung together with a touch of story. This was not the case here.
My first problem with this story is the writing is simplistic. The book is set in the deep South and ever one in a while she tries to point that out every now and again with her dialogue. Here's the thing, I have family in the South and we don't drop a Southern y'all every 50 pages but never use another contraction! This makes the dialogue stilted, it feels forced.
Secondly, this author has NEVER sprained her ankle in her life. During the course of the book Alice suffers from a 'badly sprained' ankle and yet in a matter of a week or two she's up and walking without crutches or any pain. They explain that the sprain is so bad they were worried it was broken. I am here to tell you, I sprained my ankle badly to the point my doctor was convinced it was broken and I was in a walking cast for 6 weeks, then in a strong brace for 4 and I still had to be lightly splinted several more weeks. We're talking a matter of 3-4 months of painful recovery. NOT week a week or two. Really, the author should have researched this before putting it in a book. Not to spoil anything but she also should have googled the symptoms of a major concussion. You don't go from babbling incoherently, not knowing where you are or what's going on to perfectly fine in a matter of a few breaths. We're not talking about major medical issues, this is basic and someone should have caught it.
Third, her descriptions of clothing, manners, and habits of women in the post World War 1 era are grossly inaccurate. Again, a little research would have gone a long way. Truly she has never experienced historically correct undergarments.
Here's the thing, the reason all this bothers me is that the bare bones of the story is good. I like the idea! Unfortunately it needs to be fleshed out. The characters are rather 2 dimensional and the story fails to flow. Really, I think Alice is bipolar the way she leaps, without warning to raging anger and back to docile lamb without warning or really any provocation. I love the concept that each daughter is one of the 4 elements but...there are only 3 daughters so there is obviously something amiss here. The author brings that little point back again and again like it's a profound and amazing point and by the last third of the book I found myself wanting to skip pages because really, it's got to be over soon.
I'm really glad I only paid $0.99 for this book but if I wanted writing like this I could ask any semi-gifted high school student for a tale.

ok for a light read while waiting for the train

This book didn't seem to fit the period it was written about. The storyline was very awkward and a little contrived. It was entertaining but didn't pull me in. I didn't really understand how the character names were meant after "earth, air, water" - that did not make any sense to me and I thought it distracted from the storyline. this was a fine book for $1 but I would not buy the others.
