During the past decade or more, there has been a rapid evolution of mental health services and treatment technologies, shifting psychiatric epidemiology, changes in public behavioral health policy and increased understanding in medicine regarding approaches to clinical work that focus on patient-centeredness. These contemporary issues need to be articulated in a comprehensive format. The American Association of Community Psychiatrists (AACP), a professional organization internationally recognized as holding the greatest concentration of expertise in the field, has launched a methodical process to create a competency certification in community psychiatry. As a reference for a certification examination, that effort will benefit enormously from a comprehensive handbook on the subject.

beware, this is not a clinical text
By manstein
I have to laugh at myself. I'm in community psychiatry and have been looking forward to buying this book for months. I anticipated learning new evidenced based practices particular to the community setting, diagnosis, treatment including psychopharm, etc. I assumed that because the title said psychiatry, it would be about psychiatry as I know it; treating patients.
It's not there. I just got it and want to let you know that if you wanted and were expecting what I did, you will be disappointed. I have to hand it to the author, this book is about just about every topic under the sun except diagnosis, treatment strategies, follow up, psychopharmacological strategies. If you are interested in theoretical stuff, you will probably like this book. If I knew what this book did not contain, I certainly would not have bought it. But I will keep it. I bought it and maybe I can learn something. Just not what I was hoping to learn.

The First and Last Word for aspiring Community Mental Health Practitioners
By Patrick Runnels
I have been the director of a training program for public psychiatric practitioners, as well as a medical director of a large community mental health center for the past five years. As someone incredibly familiar with the material in this book and of the broad base of literature that informs the work of community mental health, I am blown away. As a previous reviewer indicated, this DOES NOT provid clinical pearls per se, but instead provides an in depth description of concepts and theory that will easily orient newer members of the treatment community, while also helping more experienced practitioners to consolidate and reconsider the information they know. In particular, the chapters seek to summarize the literature surrounding a given topics: there is no better compendium that is both easy to understand and yet comprehensive enough to walk away with a broad understanding. Don't hesitate to pick this up if you are interested in pursuing a career in public mental health, particularly if you are planning on holding a leadership position.

Excellent Resource
By Timothy Stone
Having worked in various community mental health settings for nearly two decades, I have found this text to be an excellent resource of information on issues that are extremely relevant to my practice. It covers a broad spectrum of important topics, both clinical and administrative, but still manages to keep the discussion relevant to the practice of community behavioral health. I would recommend this book to not only psychiatrists, but social workers, nurses, mental health administrators, etc.
