The Promise Box (Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors Book 2), by Tricia Goyer

Every year, young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive 'resident' status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides!
In The Promise Box, the second book of best-selling author Tricia Goyer's Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series, Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai to give comfort to her father after her mother's death. She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother's most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture. What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational 'tell-all' book about the Amish.
Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley. She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. But will the pain of her childhood---and her potential betrayal of her community---keep her from committing her whole heart?

Review

Goyer knows how to keep readers entertained, with twists and turns and surprises in her novels that readers will want to uncover. The second book in her Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series has something for everyone: romance, mystery and family secrets. --Romantic Times
Lydia Wise grew up Amish, but is now a book editor in Seattle. She is called back home to Montana to help her father after her mother's death. There she discovers her mother's box filled with notes about prayer and scripture. While the find propels Lydia to think about the community she left behind, her boss thinks the box's contents would make for a great tell-all book on the Amish. Adding to her dilemma, Lydia finds herself falling in love with Gideon Hooley, who has traveled to West Kootenai for the hunting season. Will her recent past ruin her hopes for the future? VERDICT Two-time Carol Award winner Goyer continues her Western-flavored Amish romances (after The Memory Jar) with this lively outing, which features interesting characters and plot twists. Fans of Vannetta Chapman's Amish romances will find much pleasure in this series. --Library Journal

A sweet story in a series with room to grow!
By Jami Lynn
The Promise Box is the story of Lydia Wyse, an adopted Englisch child into an Amish home. Lydia has left her Amish community of West Kootenai to move to Seattle to edit books. While she is gone, her Amish mother passes away, leading to her return to the Amish community.

While visiting the community again, she finds herself falling for bachelor Gideon Hooley. The problem is that she can't forget where she came from--the dark history of her birth haunts her. Gideon himself has his own secrets that plague him.

I've been reading Amish novels since I was a teenager. I love them! Unfortunately, I had a hard time getting involved with this one. It didn't capture me like some of Tricia's books have in the past. I'd read a few pages, then set it down and do something else. That bothered me, and I wondered what was wrong with me! It took me several weeks to finish the book, because it just didn't draw me in.

The story was sweet in itself and had proper development, but I didn't feel a lot of emotion (i.e. love or interest) between the two characters. It almost felt like they were being drawn together by sheer force by the author. I enjoyed the progression of the story about Lydia. Tricia did a good job about making me wonder about what actually happened to Lydia and where she'd come from. However, I felt that Gideon's history seemed unrealistic and trivial in comparison.

There was some slang used in this story, but it wasn't overwhelming. This is a problem many others struggle with. Being an Appalachian, the overuse of slang in a story bugs me--it seems forced and unrealistic. The Amish also have their own slang, and sometimes that can get a bit overwhelming in an Amish novel. Thankfully, this wasn't a big issue for me. There was one spot in the story where I thought slang should have been left out. It was in Chapter Seven in the letter from Lydia's adoptive mother. The going back and forth from using "yer" to "your" felt unrealistic. I know "yer" is often used in conversation among the Amish in novels (the same as Ja or ach), but in a letter, the fact that she used "your" equally to "yer" made me feel like the character wouldn't have thrown in "yer" as well. Otherwise, the character's spelling was correct, so the misspelling of your didn't make sense.

Overall, this story was a nice read. If you enjoy Amish fiction, I think that you will enjoy this one, too.

Go. Get. It. Now!!!

I love fiction that not only tells a story, but you leave learning something too. I did just that. I believe that we all can relate to Lydia in some way, shape, and form. I know I really did. I could see myself in her shoes. You see I had been like her. There was a time in my past where I had ran from God. I had thought that I could try life on my own. My rules. My way. He would have no say. So, I ran. I ran so hard, so far, looking for that which was there all along. Looking for Him. Only I couldn't see it. Like that saying..."you can't see the forest for the trees" (Is that how it's said?-if not pretend-ha!). But all the while, God was calling me back to Him. I am so glad that He did!!!
I won't give anything away. I mean how selfish and crazy would that be?!! So, to find out how it all goes and ends, read the book ;) Trust me when I say this...go out now and buy the book!!! Read The Promise Box. You will not only LOVE it, but you will also learn so much in the process. We are right there with her and walk with Lydia down this spiritual journey. Along the way, we watch her relationship unfold with those she cares for. We watch as she tries returning to the Amish faith in which she was raised in. We witness her journey through her eyes and in the process learn a thing or two as well. Reading Ada Mae's promises, opens your eyes up to a deeper knowing of Him. You find yourself encouraged too!!!
I LOVED this book and it'll be one I'll read over and over and over again :) It's also a book that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to all :)

Tricia Goyer is a master at her craft
By Wendy L. Hines
After reading the first book in the series, The Memory Jar, and thoroughly enjoying it, I knew I was going to love this book before I even had my hands on it.

Goyer has a knack for storytelling, building realistic characters who just want to be loved and to love God. Although Lydia wants to go back to her Amish roots, the publishing industry she's been a part of for so long has taken root too. Not to mention that Gideon is sweet, handsome and a real fine catch. But can she have them both? When her secrets and his begin to reveal themselves, it will be matters of the heart that take center stage.

This town is so quaint and memorable, I can't wait to revisit it again in a new installment. The secondary characters are just as realistic and really add depth to the storyline. Definitely pick this one up. Tricia Goyer is a master at her craft and The Promise Box will stay with you long after you finish!
