The Cold War is the term that was coined to describe the relationship between the USA and the USSR that began with the end of World War Two. The Cold War dominated international politics for decades; the presence of nuclear weapons in both countries meant that the US and USSR would never themselves go to war, but their conflict was played out through the actions of numerous client states. Incidents included the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and the construction of the Berlin Wall.

COLD WAR CRASH COURSE
By MLove
This is a definite must-read for anyone looking for a crash course on the Cold War. I'm not a big fan of history books since I find that it makes me sleepy. But this book is surprisingly easy to read. The way it's written made reading history less daunting and more accessible.
This book is highly recommended for anyone who is looking for a comprehensive yet concise literature on the Cold War. A great basic starting point that may inspire the reader to further study the history of the Cold War.

The Cold War in a Nutshell
By Rome
In 1945, Klement Gottwald , leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPC), gave a speech where he said, "In spite of the favorable situation, the next goal is not soviets and socialism, but rather carrying out a really thorough democratic national revolution." This statement was however only an act. "Czechoslovakia then was the last democracy in Eastern Europe, and its fall sent a clear message to the world: the Soviets had no intention of relinquishing Germany and let it set up an independent state. As such, no nation which allied with the USSR had any hope of retaining a non-communist government."
Now, how's that for a conversation starter? In spite of some typographical errors, I'd still give this book 5 Stars for presenting what the Cold War was all about in an easy to follow manner. History and talk of international politics are always intimidating topics for conversation especially for the common man. This book would help you learn a lot in just a few minutes and stir up your curiosity enough to take down notes and even do some exciting research. Yes, you just might liven up the conversations in the next office party with your new-found history know-how.

Fascinating little book!
By Booknerd76
`The Cold War: A Very Brief History' is exactly what it says on the cover. It takes the facts and presents them in an abbreviated, chronological fashion that is straightforward and easy to understand. While it is not quite a `history for dummies' type book, it certainly is a good reference for those daunted by the prospects of wading through volumes of history books to get the general idea of exactly what the Cold War was.
As someone who had only the vaguest idea of what the Cold War was and what it represented, I was excited to get the chance to find out more and hopefully be able to hold a somewhat intelligent conversation on the topic. I certainly learned a lot! The text reminded me a bit of a history book that one would read at school, but once I got past the feeling that I was a student, I enjoyed learning about the very scary incidents that comprised the first and second Cold Wars. I was still a kid when the Berlin wall fell, and I had no idea how serious things were when President Reagan was in office, so reading this was an uncomfortable eye opener. My husband was raised in Europe, and I in the US, and I often feel he had the better, more complete education because they learned more about wars such as this in school.
This would be a great short book for use in high schools here in the States. I feel that, although there is a lot of information to digest, I did learn a fair bit in the first read through. I will probably read it again to help cement the facts a bit more in my mind.
One thing that would have helped me is a glossary of some of the terms, such as `proxy war', including their specific definitions. Also, a summary timeline would be a great help, too. Other than that, this was a fascinating book that I am going to have my husband and teenage son read, because I think they will enjoy it at least as much as I did. I think I will also check out some of the other titles in this series since there are several that interest me.
